We all know to brush our teeth every day. But, when was the last time you analyzed your brushing technique? Here are some things to remember as you brush up on your most essential dental hygiene habit.

 

Make sure you are brushing your teeth twice per day, for a full two minutes each time. Some people find it useful to set a 30-second timer for each quadrant of their mouth to ensure a thorough clean. If you have trouble spending that much time on your teeth, try listening to a favorite song–the two minutes will fly by!

 

The quality of your toothbrush makes a big difference in how well your teeth get clean. Choose a very soft-bristled toothbrush that has earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This seal is found on the packaging of individual brushes and other oral health products, and indicates that the toothbrush has been tested rigorously for safety and effectiveness. Use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste and get ready to brush!

 

Place the brush at a 45* angle to your gums and use a gentle pressure when brushing your teeth–think “massage” rather than “scrub.” If you use harsh pressure or vigorous scrubbing techniques, you run the risk of tearing up your gum tissues and tooth enamel. Even scratches that you can’t see opens up oral tissues to infection and disease.
