Your smile is important to our dental team, no matter where you are in life. This is why we encourage you to take good care of your teeth and gums! It is possible to maintain a healthy, strong and natural smile for your entire life. Here are some reminders of how to take care of your smile as you age.

Everyday, clean your teeth and gums with a very soft-bristled toothbrush. Gently clean your teeth and gum tissues for two minutes, morning and night. Use very light pressure: think “massage” more than “scrub.” You should also floss your teeth once per day for two to three minutes. If flossing has become difficult for you for any reason, talk with Dr. John Lee about traditional flossing alternatives, such as pre-strung flossers or a water flosser. The addition of an over-the-counter therapeutic mouthwash may be a good idea for the hygiene habits of some people– though it is not a substitute for flossing.

Eat a balanced, healthy diet. There are certain foods that can harm your teeth and gums: sugary, starchy, and acidic foods are on this list. It is also best to eat more fruits, vegetables and dairy products such as cheese and yogurt. If you need to limit dairy for any reason, try other calcium-rich foods such as beans, dark leafy greens or fortified cereal products.
